Adult Learner Intervention
Do you have a student who has not made a level gain, has significant difficulties in reading, writing or math, is easily distracted, forgetful or acts out in class?
The Adult Learner Intervention was developed to assist students in ABE with learning challenges or disabilities to provide instructional strategies and resources to help them succeed. It is not intended to diagnose or label the student with any particular disability.
There are apparent and non-apparent disabilities. Apparent disabilities are visible, i.e. use of a trained assistance dog, wheelchair, hearing aids, white cane, etc. Non-apparent disabilities are typically not noticeable unless disclosed, i.e. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Specific Learning Disorder (SLD), Intellectual Disability and brain injury. You may be linked to a chapter on the PANDA disability website in order to connect you with instructional/classroom strategies; however, this is not suggesting or implying a disability. Many symptoms can overlap and should be diagnosed by a professional.

STEP 1: Select the appropriate link, depending if your student was born in the U.S. or is an English Language Learner (ELL) student.
STEP 2: Go through the checklists provided to determine what challenges your student has. You will then be linked to classroom strategies to help your student.
STEP 3: If your student continues to struggle with learning after implementation of strategies from the website and handouts, contact Wendy Sweeney, PANDA Grant Coordinator for a phone consultation.
STEP 4: Once all three steps are completed, if you are still in need of assistance, complete the Adult Learner Intervention Interview and Screening Process.
